Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a variational multiscale finite element approximation for the incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations using the Boussinesq approximation to model thermal coupling.

Design/methodology/approach

The main feature of the formulation, in contrast to other stabilized methods, is that the subscales are considered as transient and orthogonal to the finite element space. These subscales are solution of a differential equation in time that needs to be integrated. Likewise, the effect of the subscales is kept, both in the nonlinear convective terms of the momentum and temperature equations and, if required, in the thermal coupling term of the momentum equation.

Findings

This strategy allows the approaching of the problem of dealing with thermal turbulence from a strictly numerical point of view and discussion important issues, such as the relationship between the turbulent mechanical dissipation and the turbulent thermal dissipation.

Originality/value

The treatment of thermal turbulence from a strictly numerical point of view is the main originality of the work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a finite element formulation to approximate thermally coupled flows using both the Boussinesq and the low Mach number models with particular emphasis on the numerical implementation of the algorithm developed.

Design/methodology/approach

The formulation, that allows us to consider convection dominated problems using equal order interpolation for all the valuables of the problem, is based on the subgrid scale concept. The full Newton linearization strategy gives rise to monolithic treatment of the coupling of variables whereas some fixed point schemes permit the segregated treatment of velocity‐pressure and temperature. A relaxation scheme based on the Armijo rule has also been developed.

Findings

A full Newtown linearization turns out to be very efficient for steady‐state problems and very robust when it is combined with a line search strategy. A segregated treatment of velocity‐pressure and temperature happens to be more appropriate for transient problems.

Research limitations/implications

A fractional step scheme, splitting also momentum and continuity equations, could be further analysed.

Practical implications

The results presented in the paper are useful to decide the solution strategy for a given problem.

Originality/value

The numerical implementation of a stabilized finite element approximation of thermally coupled flows is described. The implementation algorithm is developed considering several possibilities for the solution of the discrete nonlinear problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a finite element approximation of the low Mach number equations coupled with radiative equations to account for radiative heat transfer. For high-temperature flows this coupling can have strong effects on the temperature and velocity fields.

Design/methodology/approach

The basic numerical formulation has been proposed in previous works. It is based on the variational multiscale (VMS) concept in which the unknowns of the problem are divided into resolved and subgrid parts which are modeled to consider their effect into the former. The aim of the present paper is to extend this modeling to the case in which the low Mach number equations are coupled with radiation, also introducing the concept of subgrid scales for the radiation equations.

Findings

As in the non-radiative case, an important improvement in the accuracy of the numerical scheme is observed when the nonlinear effects of the subgrid scales are taken into account. Besides it is possible to show global conservation of thermal energy.

Originality/value

The original contribution of the work is the proposal of keeping the VMS splitting into the nonlinear coupling between the low Mach number and the radiative transport equations, its numerical evaluation and the description of its properties.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to attempt to gain a deeper understanding on small to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) and point out some of the most serious barriers for small Spanish companies to implement such kind of strategic approach and connect it with its day‐to‐day operations.

Design/methodology/approach

After laying out the conceptual framework, and after giving a short description of the Spanish institutional landscape on corporate social responsibility (CSR), the paper focuses on SMEs and the practical issues relating to strategy design, core business and implementation as identified by managers and academics.

Findings

The paper shows a joint venture and a strategic partnership between the Javier Benjumea Chair and a new small Spanish company, in which the partners start a process of mutual help and learning. That partnership is itself an interesting experiment as a case of collaboration between the enterprise and an academic institution.

Research limitations/implications

This is only the first step in generating a model applied to improve CSR uptake at the SME level.

Originality/value

The theoretical goal that is sought after in this paper is how to advance the design of a conceptual model and tools for analyzing and managing dynamically some of the most relevant intangible aspects of an SME, in order to improve its strategic management of the relationships with the stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose – To study the allocation in equity markets of sovereign wealth funds’ (SWF) investments with respect to other institutional investors. To analyze the role of political regimes in the sending and recipient countries as a determinant of the allocation of SWF investments.

Methodology/approach – We use mutual funds’ investments as a benchmark for SWF investment allocations. We collect data of SWF and mutual fund equity investments at the firm level and analyse them on a geographical and sector basis. We compare target investments for these two groups by looking at the political regime in the sending and recipient country, using different political indicators (Polity IV, Bertelsmann). We provide a comparison of SWFs and pension funds based on governance features related to investment.

Findings – We find that the fear that sovereigns with political motivations use their financial power to secure large stakes in OECD countries is not confirmed by the data. SWF investment decisions do not differ greatly from those of other wealth managers. Although there can be differences in the allocation, political regimes in the recipient countries do not play a role in explaining the allocation of sovereign wealth funds.

Social implications – Investment from public institutions, such as sovereign wealth funds, can have significant implications at the economic and social level. Sovereign funds are potential sources of capital for emerging economies, and therefore can enchance economic growth. It is important to understand to what extent public institutional investors behave differently from private investors. The “political bias” is not a relevant factor for sovereign funds, or for other institutional investors, for allocating their capital. More often than not, their asset allocation strategies converge with other large investors, these being driven by financial and not political bias.

Originality/value of the chapter – The chapter is an original contribution providing a firm-level analysis of equity holdings for two groups of institutional investors. Moreover, it emphasizes the political dimension of institutional investments, highlighting the priorities and constraints of public investors participating in financial markets. The chapter suggests that SWFs do not discriminate by the political regime of the recipient country in their asset allocation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to seize the potential of Big Data in their marketing strategies to leverage a competitive advantage in the rising digital marketplace and lead the post-pandemic economic recovery. However, Spanish SMEs have had serious difficulties in working with Big Data.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a roadmap is designed to pave the way for a successful Big Data implementation.

Findings

SMEs with updated information on how to access the historic funding opportunities might profit to this opportunity. It not only generates financing opportunities for SMEs but also grants continuity to their strategies by offering the most profitable techniques by which they can efficiently analyse data and gain consumer insights, thus overcoming the many problems they face when working with Big Data as well as helping them to monetise their marketing strategies.

Originality/value

The main advantage of this research is its innovative approach to business strategy as it provides. The value added by this paper lies in its holistic and updated approach to supporting SMEs’ Big Data strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to formulate a new theory of corruption based on the discretionary decisions of the government and the distribution of income in the economy, where corruption pays taxes and is in the legal channels of the economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is the practical exploration, based on events in the current Argentine economy, where this theory of corrupt phenomena is fulfilled, changing the approach to corruption, transforming corruption into legal.

Findings

The document concludes that the model is applicable to any country in the world, given the conditions of the theory formulated.

Research limitations/implications

There is a paradigm shift, it transforms corruption into legal.

Practical implications

In this new theory of great corruption, the consequence is that it is very difficult to combat it, because it is developed based on legal, regulatory and ethical norms.

Social implications

The social implications are through discretionary decisions of governments, large inequitable income redistributions, in favour of interest groups, pressure groups, private companies and the same state, with negative social consequences for the population.

Originality/value

This theory is original; it has not been formulated in the study of the types of corruption in the world.
